2014 Vw Golf Type R
Volkswagen has managed to wring another 30 hp from the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the 2014 Golf R. The hatch now shuttles a full 296 hp to all four wheels, and the company says that the extra grunt can push the car to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds when buyers opt for the available dual-clutch transmission. Never fear, the Golf R still comes with a six-speed manual as standard equipment; though, rowing your own will see the machine's 62-mph sprint time lag to 5.3 seconds.
No matter what gearbox you wind up with, the 2014 Golf R delivers an updated all-wheel-drive system, complete with a Haldex 5 coupling. The new system only drives the front wheels under normal conditions, which helps save a little fuel. Volkswagen says the Golf R now returns up to 34 mpg on the European scale. Get frisky with the throttle, however, and the all-wheel-drive mechanism can shoot up to 100 percent of the available power to the rear wheels before there's any loss of traction.
Of course, engineers also had their way with the suspension. The Golf R sits nearly a full inch lower than the standard Golf and 0.2 inch lower than the GTI. Likewise, the car comes fitted with a new progressive steering system that delivers 2.1 turns to lock.
Buyers can expect to see the machine land in European dealer showrooms at the end of this year.
